This Woven Heart Valentine Card was a surprise Valentine’s Day treat for my sweetie. My hubby has a big heart so he deserved a big-hearted card.
Layout Design Step Up
The layout for this card was inspired by a Valentine card created by Mary Fish. Mary’s card has a great mixture of layer shapes and sizes as well as masculine colors. I decided to change the layers it up a bit and stepped up by using a bigger center heart and by weaving the paper for it.
Make A Woven Heart
Do you remember making pot holders on those little metal looms when you were a kid? That’s pretty much what I did to make this heart.
Step 1 – Cut Strips Of DSP
Cut 1/2” strips of the Wood Textures DSP in approximately 6 1/2” lengths. It’s a great way to use up scraps. Note: The length of the strips depends on what you want to do with the woven paper. For example – the size of the woven paper will need to fit the die you plan to use.
Step 2 – Make A Paper “Loom”
Arrange 9 strips of paper next to each other aligned vertically. Gently secure the top end of each strip to your work surface using removeable tape. This creates a “loom” for you. I used Scotch® Removeable Double Sided Tape for this. Again – the number of strips varies with how you intend to use the woven paper.
Step 3: Weave Over and Under
Working gently, begin horizontally weaving strips into the vertical “loom”. For Row 1: Slide the strip under the leftmost (or first) vertical strip, over the second one, over the third one and so on. When you have finished weaving in the strip, use your fingers to gently push it up as close to the taped end as possible. For Row 2: start by placing it over the leftmost strip, under the second strip etc. Again, gently push it as close to the strip above it as possible. Repeat Row 1 and Row 2 weaving patterns until you get to the bottom or have as much woven paper as you need. Remember to keep pushing the woven strips as close to each other as possible. You may have to do this again when you get to the bottom.
Step 4: Secure The Weaved Strips
Carefully take the removeable tape off. Flip the woven paper over and place it facedown on your work table. Remove one of the protective covers from a Multipurpose Adhesive Sheet (they have one on each side) and very carefully lay the sticky side down on the woven paper. Make sure there are no air bubbles by gently pressing it down. Do not remove the second protective cover from the adhesive sheet.
Step 5: Die Cut The Heart
Use a Sweet & Sassy Framelits die to cut a heart from the center of the woven paper. Viola! You have created a beautiful woven heart. When you’re ready to use it, peel the protective cover from the back and adhere it to your project.
Embellish To Your Heart’s Desire
Embellish the card front as you like. I used Linen Thread, Touches of Nature Elements and 5/8″ Burlap Ribbon to add masculine textures. The Stitched Shapes Square also adds interest. I offset the design elements to one side of the card and used Stampin’ Dimensions (of course) to add multiple levels.
Finish the Inside
A special card like this Woven Heart Valentine Card deserves the extra touch of decorating the inside. Layer a coordinating color cardstock behind the sentiment stamped in a coordinating color on Whisper White cardstock. This sentiment comes from the Sure Do Love You stamp set. I used Early Espresso Classic Stampin’ ink to stamp it.
